2017, predictions in gaming

2017 is starting to look like a good year for games similar to the explosion of quality we received in 2015. It hard for me to choose a GOTY for 2016, simply put i never played allot of new games over the year. However now i have a rather large back log of games from last year, including Deus Ex, Dishonored 2 and Uncharted. Undeterred I’m aiming to blast through them ASAP.

If i had to choose – DOOM won GOTY for 2016 followed by Overwatch and Firewatch. This was picked up by Polygon, but not followed up by the Game Awards who went with Overwatch. Personally I can’t see a purely multiplayer game taking GOTY, but thats the elitist in me who see’s online games as little more than crack and insult generators.

So 2017.

I have a few predictions for this year. Im not going to list all the games coming out, just the ones i feel could be contenders for 2017 GOTY and ones which will amount to nothing, like how No Mans Sky was the best thing since the atom bomb but failed to take off (thats a space joke).

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard: The last 2 Resident Evils have been pretty under whelming. Resident Evil 4 took a different turn and became an instant classic. Five saw you play a steroid addicted beat the shit out of the locals followed by a fight in the a volcano. Six, something happened… but I’m confidant that seven will take the franchise into a different direction and could potentially take GOTY.

Conan: Exiles: This showed up late to my game radar and i predict it going down as a cheap mans Skyrim. But i’m hopeful its more.

For Honor: I’m going to call it now, this is going to be a buggy disappointment. Not only is it made by Ubisoft (boo) its all so hyped up to shit. Personally i hope i’m wrong, but something seems off about this title.

Horizon: Zero Dawn: This game is the reason i bought a PS4 (that and FFXV), I hope it lives up to my expectation. I hope it even goes down as GOTY.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands: This ones here for the bro’s, you know who you are. It’s likely to be a Steam Sale (Origin?) buy for me. I can see the appeal and i hope it does well, but not the game for me and unlikely to be GOTY.

Mass Effect: Andromeda: Its Mass Effect, its going to be good. The gameplay seems to have further evolved from the original cover shooter idea, but in general it seems to be grounded to the originals. People love Mass Effect so i see this doing well and maybe even taking GOTY. On a personal level i felt disappointed by the two and three, I can’t see me being that impressed by the fourth outing.

Prey: Im not entirely sure what i expect from Prey, its definitely not a sequel to the original Prey released in 2006. The game play and media released around it gives off a solid appeal which could do well. Definitely one to look out for.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: You could put a good amount of money on this taking 2017 GOTY. It’s Zelda, it’s Nintendo, it’s taken fucking ages to release. The gameplay released around this title looks polished and i’m generally excited for its release. Zelda being one of a few title i generally give a shit about when it comes to Nintendo. However the constant delay and the over the top hype coming in from the gaming media might see it fall flat on its arse, followed by a large amount of blog post entitled “It’s time to stop over hyping games”.

Read Dead Redemption 2: Another strong contender for GOTY. Unfortunately i see this getting delayed to early 2018. But still i’m hyped. Having not played the original for more than 2 hours i’m looking forward to getting into this sequel.

GOTY (Games of the year), because picking 1 wouldn’t be fun.

Stand back and look in shock-horror at yet another 2015 GOTY post. Everyone and your mum has posted their top something games of the year and then gone ahead and put a number next to each one. In order to spice things up a bit i’m going to just list the 3 games I played this year, since all of them pushed the 50-100 hour mark i’m not entirely sure how I was suppose to play anything else.

So tl:dr – Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Fallout 4.

(No surprise there then)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

With over 70 hours invested into MGS5 its easy to see why it made the pack, the game is fitting episode in the MGS franchise, but not a fitting end to it. If like me you where expecting a solid break down of what the fuck is all going on and how everything works together you will be disappointed. The game has the potential to be one of the all time best games to hit your eyes, unfortunately it falls apart towards the end.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

For me this was my most anticipated games of 2015. The Witcher 2 is in my top games to play in your life time and its being put together by one of the best development teams currently working in the industry. I might have sounded a bit too harsh on the game when I reviewed it after my initial play through. My hatred of sandbox norms unfortunately meant that I didn’t appreciate it as much as i should have. This year I plan to replay the game with the new expansions, lets hope this will make the game live up to my expectations.

Fallout 4

Having had trouble getting into Fallout 3, I was on the fence about Fallout 4. The game however dragged me in and I poured 50+ hours into it.. I liked the game, it kept me interested for an ample amount of time, I didn’t know what to expect so for me it was a nice time sink. For everyone else it wasn’t so good, it felt to console’affied (coined it) no longer living up to the Fallout franchise and your ability to persuade end-bosses to kill themselves – or something. Anyway didn’t work out to well.

So thats it 2015 the year sandboxes games became the norm.

Why wait for GOTY

Batman Arkham Knight has been an overwhelming car crash on the PC, aside from the complete fuck up from the outsourcing company who did the PC port the whole marketing of the game has left me.. disappointed.

Releasing platform specific content is a fucking pain, do the marketing bro’s think that by releasing a piece of content on the ‘console-a’ as opposed to ‘console-b’ this will somehow mean that the average “Johnny Johning’son” will now pull £400 out of his magic money bag and pay for your console because – “OMG I NEED ALTERNATIVE ENDING 5”.

Probably not…

Gamers just want to play your game, the full version of your game. Give more for the price tag, your average game price is £55. I don’t know about some people but that’s a big investment and the fact that someone has chosen to put money in your product means they want the best.

Gamers just want to play your game.

My advice is to avoid the release day fuck around and just wait 6-8 months for the GOTY addition with all the additional console specific loveliness, but that’s easier to say than to do.

I’m not totally against DLC, I get that some games companies can’t get everything done before live but wishes to add more content to the game at a later date and to bring the player back in. For a good price and a solid expansion I would gladly pay. Wither 3 currently has chargeable DLC planned but its something I’m willing to invest in, because I trust the company to deliver.

Something I’m not a fan of is butchering up a game for marketing reasons and that’s why in the case of Batman Arkham Knight I will be waiting for GOTY addition.

By buying the GOTY addition you will also get a much more solid game, thanks to all the bugs being ironed out and all problems being fixed over the months. With games becoming more complex I expect first day jitters, no amount of testing can be done to take into account every eventuality, sometimes you just have to release a game and see what happens.

Arkham however was a cluster fuck on the PC something companies seem to be getting wrong allot these days (I’m looking at you Fable Anniversary, Assassins creed, etc). It not like they where slight problems either I’m talking crippling issues which resulted in a pull of the PC version from sales. I know its shit but sometimes just push the release date back.

You can do better.

For those who cant wait. Thanks for letting us know not to buy it right now.
